If you’re sight-seeing in Cabo San Lucas, it’ll be difficult to miss Cabo Wabo.
This gigantic nightclub has been around for about 20 years and just continues to get more popular. In fact, it’s spawned another location in Lake Tahoe and a line of successful tequila. Who is the genius behind all of this? Rock musician and (sometimes) frontman of Val Halen, Sammy Hagar.
Like any good nightclub, there’s a story behind its creation. This story involves its unusual name. According to Hagar, back in the day, he was in Cabo and saw a local guy who had partied a little too hard. This guy was trying to walk but was very unsteady and actually fell into a fence. Sammy saw him and thought to himself, “That guy is doing the Cabo Wobble,” which evolved into Cabo Wabo.
When Cabo Wabo was built, Cabo San Lucas was not the populated tourist center that it is today; it was little more than a quiet fishing village which made the size of the cantina especially ostentatious at the time. Maybe Hagar had a crystal ball and knew that, one day, Cabo would be a major vacation destination and that, because of that, Cabo Wabo would be a perfect size. Or maybe he just got lucky. Either way, it worked out well.
Cantina remains one of the best places to visit if you’re interested in a good time. Stop by some live music and a drink. As you might have guessed from the name, Cabo Wabo Cantina was the birthplace of Cabo Wabo Tequila which was specially commissioned by Hagar and was handmade from a family-owned distillery. In 1999, Cabo Wabo Tequila began to be imported in the United States and has evolved from the cantina in- house brand to one of the top-selling tequilas in America.
